The UFC 254: Khabib vs. Gaethje is a mixed martial arts event scheduled to take place on the 24th of October, 2020, and organized by the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). This fight will be held at the Flash Forum on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates.

Background

This contest is scheduled to be held at prime time hours. According to the schedule, the main card would start at 10 pm local time on 24th October, while the full preliminary card will start at Gulf Standard Time around 6.15 pm.

This unification bout in the UFC Lightweight Championship between Khabib Nurmagomedov (who is the current champion) and ex-Lightweight Champion of the WSOF – Justin Gaethje has been identified to be the major event, with everyone anticipating what the result would be.

This bout was linked briefly to UFC 253; however, it could not take place on the said date, and so it had to be rescheduled to hold five weeks later. On the 17th of September, the UFC announced that it had signed Michael Chandler, who had previously won the Bellator Lightweight World Champion three-times. He is supposed to serve as a potential replacement and backup for this great fight coming up.

Initially, a middle bout was scheduled to hold last March, during UFC 248 between Robert Whittaker, former UFC Middleweight Champion, and Jared Cannonier; however, the fight didn’t happen as Whittaker pulled out of the fight due to reasons best known to him. This bout is now set to happen at this event.

Also expected to hold at this event is the featherweight bout between Yair Rodriguez (featherweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America) and Zabit Magomedsharipov. This bout has been scheduled previously on two occasions. The first was in September 2018 at UFC 228, while the second was to be held in August this year at the UFC Fight Night between Smith and Rakic. However, both events could not hold as Rodriguez pulled out with injury.

Ion Cutelaba and Magomed Ankalaev first had a light heavyweight bout during UFC Fight Night: Benavidez versus Figueiredo, where Ankalaev won the fight controversially via knockout. Due to the bout’s controversial nature, the UFC decided to reschedule the fight for UFC 249. However, Ankalaev ended up pulling out of the fight as a result of travel restrictions relating to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Later, the fight was rescheduled for UFC 252; however, Cutelaba had to pull out after testing positive for Coronavirus. The fight was rescheduled once again for UFC Fight Night: Smith vs. Rakic, only for it to be yet postponed again on the fight day, leading to the eventual cancellation of the fight. Now, this fight has been rescheduled for the third time to hold at this event.

A welterweight bout between Shavkat Rakhmonov and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos was expected to happen at this event. Unfortunately, Zaleski pulled out of the fight late September as a result of an injury to his knee and will undergo surgery.

The Main Event

Khabib has made his mark as one of UFC’s most dominant forces ever since he made his debut back in 2012. On 24th October, during the UFC 254 main event, Nurmagomedov will be coming up against one of the greatest ever challenges he has faced all through his career when he comes up against Justin Gaethje (an interim champion).

Gaethje will be participating after he gave his best ever performance during the interim championship, after claiming a win over Tony Ferguson with a 5th round TKO.

Gaethje will be having a fight with Nurmagomedov, after travel restrictions prevented his planned fight with Ferguson, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. This is the 5th time a planned bout between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson was canceled.

Overview: Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib has spent more than 10 years in MMA, and to date, no opponent has been able to defeat him. Some actually came close to beating him, but none succeeded. He has been perfect so far, with a 28-0 winning streak going into this fight with Justin Gaethje. His strong ground striking, as well as his frequent takedowns, seems to go beyond everyone’s expectations.

After winning in UFC 229 (the highest-selling MMA event ever) against Corner McGregor, it is hard to see any MMA fan alive today that hasn’t heard of his name.

Overview: Justin Gaethje

31-year-old Justin Gaethje got his wrestling background from NCAA Division I. Although, till now Justine Gaethje is a proven wrestler, there have been zero takedown attempts on him. Another thing is that he looks totally impervious to concussions and pains.

He has this defense method of taking so many blows to his head until other guys become very tired; watching all these fights looks so insane. The amount of punishments he had to go through during his fights seems unbelievable.

He lost last while fighting Dustin Poirier, after taking 174 strikes from him without even considering a takedown. He lost this fight in the 4th round via TKO. Gaethje is a strong fighter who seems to ignore his strength to focus on his strategy for the fight which led to the two losses he has ever experienced in UFC.

After this, he has been winning. Although he had two straight losses, his UFC fights either earned him Fight of the Night or Performance of the Night bonuses. Since the birth of UFC, he is the bonus winner of all time.
